I'm looking for sort of a middle ground, where instead of having a quest list of "things to do/make" there's a list of "things" that you are given to collect, kind of like a pokedex, and it's your job to try to figure out how to do this. Tl dr it might be easier to find and use existing high quality texture/material assets than to totally make your own and I can assist with that because I need them too. There are questing modpacks, and there are kitchen sink modpacks. Not sure if you're a solo artist or with a studio but either way is cool. I'm more of a traditional artist who went 3d than an actual game artist by trade, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt if you like, but I do have the advantage of having to hunt down a lot more homegrown resources that studios might not be aware of. sorry that is a bit long, but textures are (sorta) my thing (among other things). That's how I view texturing, for anything other than custom designs, like fabric patterns.Īnyway. clothes designers don't sew their own cloth. Other stuff, people put their assets out there to be used for a reason!) Like. (That's my philosophy actually - I prioritize the parts of the project that only I can do. (If you like, I can link you to the ones I personally like most.)Įspecially for something as complex as archviz, t may be faster and more efficient to use existing assets like that, rather than investing time in making your own textures, that could go to other aspects of the project that only you can do.

if you're looking to create your own, I'll direct you to the seamless processor I use, but I'd note that that will only get you a diffuse textures (I know Substance can process diffuses into PBR texture sets, but still), and also note that there are a ton of people out there who do really high quality seamless realistic materials like what you're mentioning. I usually do my texturing with real photoref that I hunt down myself (it's just fun!) but there are definitely a LOT of things you can't find a correct photo for, and need something like that instead.Īctually, since your reply just mentioned realistic materials. I'm planning on using it to generate wire and muscle fiber materials for a character I'm reworking soon, but I just have fallen behind and not gotten to him yet, so I can't actually report results of FF. You're welcome! No one else I know has ever heard of this program, but I really like it. TL DR expensive, but worth it if you use the kind of things it's capable of creating. So if your art is more artistic/stylized (as mine is), it could be a better pick. Everyone knows Substance, and Substance is photorealism and this is not. Genetica from SpiralGraphics is spiritually similar but outdated. It seems to be approaching the end of its lifespan, to some degree (there are much fewer new filters uploaded by people) but like, if you want something that will generate genuinely new texture images for you, this would probably do it? I don't know of a good alternative, at least in terms of modern purchasable software. There seems to be no real limitations to the program however, some of the filters people have created are mind blowing.

I also found it very difficult to find what filters I actually wanted, and downloaded some of them one by one with the aforementioned library function just so that I'd know where to locate the things I wanted to use. If you go for it, do not buy the "library" extra software, I got burned on that its internal library search is much better. Not to sound like I'm shilling the product here or anything I just think it's very cool. I have FilterForge! I have to admit, I haven't actually used it a whole bunch, but so far, I've been very impressed with its capabilities and range of filters.
